Personalize

Above the doorways in each of our bedrooms is a small space that I thought would be a great place to personalize my boys’ rooms.

I found some large, white letters at Michael’s that could be hung. I painted the “J” letter with some blue paint, but left the “D” white. I found some coordinating scrapbook paper to match their rooms and then used mod podge to attach it to the letter. I also used a coat to seal it.

I then had some vinyl made of the rest of their name and hung it above the door in their bedrooms. I think they turned out just perfect. It gives the vinyl look a little depth. It's a simple way to personalize their rooms, ya know just in case they forget which room they're supposed to sleep in :-).

Do you like to personalize?

Bath Blocks

Okay, here's a simple project that's been done many times. But I just love the look. So I started out with this.

I found the wood in the Home Depot scrap box for $.50 - score and had it cut while I was there. I then gave them a coat of Dark Chocolate craft paint.

I put on a coat of mod podge and then added some fun scrapbook paper I found at Heartland.

I added some chocolate brown vinyl.

Then I added another heavy coat of mod podge over the entire thing and let it dry for a few hours.

This is how they turned out.

I recently changed the color scheme in our tiny master bathroom from navy to chocolate brown with some shades of blue. Just love them.

A small change - Candlestick

A few weeks ago I went to Big Lots to see if they had any good treasures. One thing I did find was this $2.00 curvy, wooden candlestick. I loved it and wish they had different sizes, but there was only one size. I snagged up it anyway - who could go wrong for $2.00.

I decided it would be perfect to add to my tray that I created from a picture frame. It would have been perfect just left alone too, but I decided to give it a couple coats of white spray paint. I sanded the edges a bit for the "distressed" look and added a green candle I found at Michael's on clearance. Now it's sitting pretty on my tray.

See what a little change can do!! What little change can you make today?

July - All About Flags!!

Okay, so I love to decorate for the 4th of July. It's a great American holiday. Who doesn't love a little red, white and blue? I put up my Americana decor right before Memorial Day, so we have been enjoying it all summer. Well I had an extra 4x4 post lying around so I decided to use it to make a flag.

Here's what I started with:

Paint some lines, add a wooden star with a little wood glue and a bit of stain for the antique look - and there you go - instant FLAG!!!

Looks great on my baker's rack. I just love it.

Hope you're having a great summer too. It's almost time to put away those flags and get out the fall decor - can you belive it??? Man, this summer is flying by.

Frame Turned Tray

I found this really nice big frame at the thrift store for $4.00. I thought of a couple different uses for it but then decided to turn it into a tray.

Here's a picture of it. Notice the "matting" around the picture, well it's fake. It's part of the picture. So anyway I knew I wasn't going to use the picture so it didn't matter anyway, but just thought it was kind of funny.

First off I covered the glass because there was backing on the frame, which I ended up ripping off anyway.

Then gave it a coat of white spray paint. I didn't cover it very good because I wanted to give it a distressed look so some of the brown was still showing.

After it got some spray paint, I added a black handle on each side that I found at Home Depot for $2.79 each. So I drilled some holes and then attached the handles.

I found some cute outdoor material at JoAnn's for $4.50. I got a 1/2 yard but only used half of it.

I hot glued the material to the cardboard backing of the frame.

Then I put it back in the frame and there ya go - Tray.

Add a few accessories and use it as a table center piece, or on a coffee table or even on your outdoor picnic table.

Summer Clearance = Good Deals

I stopped into Roberts today and found they had all their spring decor on sale 60% off. They had lots of cute things but I ended up coming home with a couple chunky flowers for $2.80 each. They are wide enough you can either stand them up for a little summer accent on a shelf or you could easily attach them to a cute painted board with some vinyl. So here they are. For now I think I will just use them as summer decor.

I also found this cute Family metal tile for only $4.00 regular $9.99. They were back by the easels and not marked down, but the lady said they were 60% off - sweet. I think I'll put it in my family room and use a cute easel.

I also stopped in to Target and they have all their summer "stuff" on sale. So now is the time to stock up on those water and sand toys and you can always use more bubles.

What good summer clearance deals have you found?

Back From Vacation

Well we just got back from our summer vacation to the Seattle area to visit family. We had a great time hanging out with everyone and doing some fun activities.

We did some horseback riding.

We spent one day at the lake playing in the sand and water. This little guy loved it.

Went downtown and visited the Seattle Aquarium.

We also spent a day at Wild Waves Theme Park and got in some fun rides and water slides. On our way home we drove down part of the Oregon Coast and was finally able to see the ocean after the morning fog lifted. It was beautiful.

We also spent most of one driving through the Redwoods. We had a great trip. Wish we would have had more time to see the Redwoods. We just got a glimpse.

Now we're back to the grind. Happy Summer!!

Kitchen Valances

Well since I decided to phase out my apple decor and use more neutrals I needed to change up my kitchen valances. I had a hard time finding any pictures of the "before" but here's one with the kitchen under construction.

BEFORE:

I was originally going to buy some material and make my own but one day while shopping at Target I stumbled upon some cream lined toppers for only $4.19 each. Score!! I knew I couldn't buy material for cheaper than that so I snagged up what they had - 3. I hung them up and thought they looked a little "plain". So I went to Michael's and bought some wide black ribbon and just made a loop and hot glued it together and then added a bow, which is also hot glued to the ribbon. So here they are today. I really like them.

AFTER:

I also added a little vinyl above the window by the sink.

Water - is it magnetic?

Okay, do you notice how kids are somehow just drawn to water - no matter the weather or time of day? Well last week after taking my two boys for a walk one evening, it was a little warm, but barely in the mid 70's and it was close to 8:30 p.m., but somehow they found the sprinkler in the backyard. I had been watering some dry spots in the yard and my garden. I was going to move the sprinkler to another spot, but before I could they found it, clothes and all.

This boy showed no fear of the water right in his face. He was in water heaven. They were both little ice cubes though when they were done. A nice warm bath fixed that.

Enjoy some sprinkler fun - clothes and all.

Happy Red, White and Blue!!!

I just love celebrating the Fourth of July and I especially love decorating our home with Americana decor. I didn't make or purchase very many new patriot things this year. But one project I did were these cute little stackers.

I just bought some wood from Home Depot and had it cute into 6", 8" and 10" pieces. I bought some paint at Michaels and painted each size a different color and added a little stain to give them an antique look. Then I added some vinyl and there you go. Cute patriot decor.

I hope you all have a fun and safe holiday weekend.
