Updated Laminate Book Shelf

I have had this white laminate book case for years - I think I bought it while I was in my junior year of college.

It's been a great book case and a great height as well.  The shelves of course are adjustable and strudy enough to hold plenty of books.  I knew I wanted to change it up a bit though.  I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of bead board paneling.

I had it cut down at Home Depot to the size I needed for the back of the bookcase.  With the help of my 3 year old, we took out all the nails from the old backing.  That was quite the project too - some of those nails were stubborn, but we got them all out.  Then using the same nails, I nailed the bead board to the back of the bookshelf.

I also bought some trim at Home Depot that I cut myself with the handsaw that is provided at the store.  I cut 4 equal pieces.  I added each piece to the front of the shelves with some finishing nails.  Then I filled in the holes with putty, and painted the trim with some white semi-gloss paint.

I added a few accessories and it was done.  I added the trim to the shelf part only, so they are still adjustable.

Now it looks like a whole new bookshelf - good for another 10 plus years.

I think the bead board really adds to the overall look of the bookshelf. I just love how it turned out.

The room is really coming together now.

Now on to the next project.

  3. That is beautiful, you turned a cheap bookcase, into something that looks like it came from Pottery Barn, I love it! I have one of those bookshelf, and will do that to mine sometimes. One question, where did you find the nursery baskets with liners? I have looked all over for them and can't find any.
