A Big Ol' Flag

As I was thinking of how I wanted to decorate my mantel for the summer, one thing was for certain I wanted a big ol' flag to be the main focal point.  I've seen lots of old windows painted as flags or slats of wood, but I didn't have either of those.  So I came up with the next best solution - a free foam poster board from work.  We get tons of these for trial exhibits, so I snagged one up and brought it home from work the other day.  See it's huge.

I taped off the areas I wanted to paint red and then just started painting.

I was surprised how much paint the foam board soaked up.

Then I took off the tape and painted the white stripes - I used Americana Buttermilk.

I found this star at Michael's for $.99 and figured it would work rather than painting a million (50) small ones.

Then I painted the blue part - Deep Midnight Blue.

I also wiped down the whole thing with a little stain and then hot glued the star on.

Added a little raffia bow to the star with some hot glue too and it was ready to hang with a little ribbon secured to the back.

I'm so pleased with how it turned out.  I had all the supplies on hand - except the star and more paint - so for less than $2.00 I made this big ol' flag.
